Welcome to the Green Options development blog!

Green Options is the result of a long evolution of ideas, an attempt to bring the power of internet technology to bear on the complex set of market interactions that make up our energy and lifestyle choices.

We here at GO strive to create the most comprehensive online resource for anyone who wants to find out what sustainability means, why it’s important, and what they can do to adopt it without sacrificing their quality of life.

We say we are “Greening The Good Life” because although our country’s rapid development has given us as high a standard of living as most of the world can imagine, we have only been able to do so because of access to vast amounts of fossil energy. This isn’t completely a bad thing; it got us to where we are today. But our lifestyle—and especially energy—choices are clearly having long-term impacts on the world, and although it may not seem like it on a day to day basis, they affect us as well.

When we curse under our breath about gas prices, our heating bills in the winter, or our cooling bills in the summer, we feel trapped. We’ve created a society that is abjectly dependent on the energy sources that enabled us to get where we are. This dependence leaves each and every one of us vulnerable to unforeseen events. History shows us that as a civilization, we are great at adapting to slow, incremental changes in the world. But we are resolutely terrible at preparing for sudden events that cannot be precisely forecasted.

And yet we must prepare. If we start early, we can lessen our dependence, and our impact, while maintaining the ‘good life’ of American freedom and prosperity. To paraphrase a Saudi Oil Minister, the Stone Age didn't end for lack of stones, and the Age of Oil will be no different. Better opportunities arose for those primitive humans, and the situation is not much different today. Solar, wind, and other renewable resources, as well as environmentally sustainable consumer goods, are finally reaching the mainstream. The time is now, and the choice is ours.

Besides moral imperative of climate change and 'global weirding' of weather patterns, besides the national security imperative to lessen our dependence on foreign oil, our country has the incredible opportunity to take a position of leadership in sustainable technologies and products. We could create hundreds of thousands of secure 'green collar' jobs for American workers, and lead the world into the future with our heads held high.

Green Options would like to help you contribute to that vision of common prosperity. Again, welcome to your home for Greening the Good Life.
